This website provides a vast amount of information from how to report financial aid and scholarship money on your taxes to how to save for college expenses tax free. tnAchieves Scholarship Program

tnAchieves provides an opportunity for Tennessee public high school graduates from the class of 2014 to receive up to $3,000 annually for community college tuition.

Federal Programs

FAFSA stands for FREE Application for Federal Student Aid.  The most noted word being FREE.  This site will provide you with all of the information needed to apply for federal and state financial aid.  Completing this application also makes available to you the Tennessee HOPE Lottery Scholarship for college and the Wilder-Naifeh Technical Skills Grant for attending technical school.  This is also the form the federal government uses to determine your eligibility for aid.

Selective Service

If you are a man between the ages of 18-25 and living in the U.S., you must register with Selective Service. It is the law.  According to law, a man must register within 30 days after his 18th birthday.'s Debt Help Organization

This link provides useful information that can help in making budgeting, financing and overall debt decisions regarding higher education financing.  This information can also be used to better manage your debt and finances throughout life.  It is a great tool.

Scholarships (Guidelines and Deadlines)
Alzheimer's Foundation of America

The awards range from $250 to $5,000.  To enter, students must submit and autobiography and write a 1200 to 1500 word essay answering the questions on the website.  Students must also submit other supporting documents and an application, which can be found online.  Deadline is February 15.

American Foreign Service Association

First place winner receives $2500 and an all-expense paid trip to the Capitol.  To enter, students must write an essay on the topic provided on the website.  Students whose parents are members of United States Foreign Service are not eligible.  All entries must be postmarked by April 15.

American Legion Oratorical Contest Scholarship

Awards range from $1500 on the local level to $18,000 on the national level.  Students should contact the local American Legion for details and more information.

AXA Financial Achievement and Community Scholarships

For the achievement scholarship, state winners receive $10,000 and national winners receive an additional $15,000 and an internship offer.  For the community scholarship, each AXA Advisor's branch office awards up to 12 $2000 scholarships yearly.  Applications are due by February 15.

Best Buy's @15 Scholarship

Scholarships in the amount of $1000 are awarded to students based on academic achievement, volunteer efforts and work experience.  All high school student who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study after graduating high school are eligible to apply.  Applications and deadlines can be found on the website in January.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Gates Millennium Scholars

Awards are based on a student's financial need.  Scholarships are renewable.  This program is open to African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students who are graduating high school seniors.  To be eligible, students must have a minimum 3.3 GPA, show strong leadership skills and demonstrate financial need.  Additional requirements and applications can be found on the website.  Deadline is January.

Burger King Scholars Program

Scholarship amounts are up to $25,000.  To be eligible, students must have aminimum GPA of 2.5 and plan to enroll full-time in an accredited two- or four-year program.  Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement, school involvement, and community involvement.  The application period is November through January.

Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship Program

Only Chick-fil-A team members are eligible to apply for this scholarship.  The top 25 Leadership Scholarship recipients will also receive an additional $1000 S. Truett Cathy Scholar award.

Coca-Cola Scholars

National scholars receive $20,000 and regional scholars receive $10,000 over a four-year period.  This scholarship is for high school seniors.  To be elibible, students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA at the end of their junior year and be planning to pursue a degree at an accredited post-secondary institution.  Applications are accepted August through October each year.

Discover Tribute Award Scholarship Program

The award amount is $25,000 and is available for high school juniors only.  To be eligible, students must have a minimum 2.75 GPA and demonstrate community involvement and leadership skills.  In addition, students must have also faced a significant challenge.  Deadline is January 31.

East Tennessee Foundation

The amount of the award varies by the different scholarships.  Students should visit the website to determine which scholarships they are eligible for and to find application materials.

Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Competition

National winnersreceive $4,000 - $60,000 over a four-year period.  All high school students who are U.S. Citizens are eligible to apply.  Awards are based on financial need, leadership, and scholarship.  Applications must be submitted to a local Elks Lodge either in person or by mail.  Deadline is November 2.

Elks National Foundation Legacy Awards

The award amount is $4,000 over a four year period.  Children and grandchildren of living Elks members are eligible to apply.  Students must be a high school senior and have taken the ACT or SAT before the end of the year.  Applications must be submitted online.  Deadline is January 8.


Varsity Tutors Monthly Scholarship Contest

Varsity Tutors holds a monthly $1,000 college scholarship contest where students must write an essay in response to a monthly prompt.  Visitors to the Varsity Tutors scholarship webpage are able to vote via social media for submitted entries.  The top five entries with the most votes are reviewed by Varsity Tutors at the end of the month and one winner is subsequently chosen to receive the $1,000 college scholarship. Interested students can enter at the email address listed above.

TN Promise

Seniors may apply for the Tennessee Promise Scholarship, which will provide two years of tuition-free attendance at a community or technical college in Tennessee.
